The PhD degree program in Civil Materials and Engineering (0805Z2) relies on the key disciplines of civil engineering in Guangdong Province. 土木材料与工程（0805Z2）博士学位点依托广东省优势重点学科土木工程，建设有广东省高校高性能新型结构与建筑材料重点实验室、广东省高校国际合作创新平台：广工-香港理工高性能结构与材料联合研究中心、3个广东省工程研究中心：广东省土木工程技术研究中心；广东省高性能新型建筑材料工程技术研究中心；广东省结构安全控制工程技术研究中心。“土木工程”入选国家一流专业建设，并拥有“国家级土木工程实验教学示范中心”、“国家级工程实践教育中心”、“土木工程国家级特色专业”等4个国家级教学平台。
学位点目前有7名博士生导师，均具有海外留学经历，近5年主持国家级项目13项，科研经费5000余万，发表高水平SCI论文80余篇，获得省部级以上奖励5项。
学科以广东土木工程建设领域的基础理论及关键问题研究为基础，开展富有华南地区区域特色的研究，主要围绕新型结构及新材料设计理论及方法，研究建筑结构新体系、新型建筑材料结构、生态建筑节能新材料与新结构等。在新型复合材料结构理论、高性能混凝土材料性能研究等方面形成了特色和优势。土木材料与工程博士学位点目前实验面积5000余平方米，拥有大型MTS拟动力系统、大型海洋环境干湿循环系统、MTS疲劳实验系统、大吨位长柱试验机、高性能材料试验机、真三轴仪、高性能计算服务器等一批高水平实验设备。
